• Services and corrugated iron roofing are seemingly the main business activities, after smallholder agriculture.

• Local crops include maize, rice, bananas and potatoes. Tanzania has a free market in agricultural produce, and Mbeya transports vast amounts of its maize to other areas of Tanzania.

• There is also extensive animal husbandry, with dairy cattle predominating. Smallholder agriculture is not standardised; methods vary greatly and are often innovative. High-value export crops are also grown, such as tea and coffee. There is some smallholder cultivation of tobacco.

• Bamboo is naturally abundant in the forests, and there are plans to teach local people about this versatile plant and its many uses. Some gold is still mined in the rural Chunya District, by artisan miners.

.Commercial Activities . Agricultural and manufactured products are sold both retail and wholesale. The informal economy in this area is significant, petty hawkers making up the bulk of traders. Second hand clothing, household goods, cloth, and foodstuffs dominate the informal trade.

Forced licensing and taxation of small-scale businesspeople has caused some friction between the government and citizens, leading on multiple occasions to demonstrations and local resistance.

Major Industries. Most of the industrial production is geared toward local commodities. Important industries include food processing and the manufacture of textiles, alcoholic beverages, and cigarettes. Because of the relatively unspoiled game parks and only rare incidents of insecurity, tourism is a growing industry.

Trade. throughout most of the area, however, production and marketing are severely constrained by very poor infrastructure, from roads and railroads to communication and power networks.
