Zanzibar Silk Route Restaurant

You are Here: › Zanzibar Silk Route Restaurant.

I normally don't like to repeat a restaurant when on vacation but I ate at Zanzibar Silk Route Restaurant a second time when it had been pouring off and on all day and I didn't want to stray far from the hotel.

At the bottom of the stairs you are cordially greeted by a young host who escorts you up to the balcony restaurant.

I was lucky to get a table by the railing where I could look over the streets on both visits.

Although the place is big and can be crowded I got a menu quickly, and my drink order taken.

Some pappadum and relishes were brought to the table which whetted my appetite.

On the first visit I chose Shrimp Piri-piri.

The piri-piri was rich and spicy and the accompanying bowl of rice a nice foil for it.

The shrimp must have been very fresh as their flavor still managed to come through the spicy sauce; unfortunately, there were only three of them buried in the sauce.

The beer was nice and cold and served in a frosted glass.

On my second visit the place was quite crowded and there was a huge table seated.

I was worried it would take forever to get waited on and served, but service again was very efficient.

This time I ordered Shrimp Vindaloo which was also really good--if you're sensitive to chili this is not the dish for you; it's very spicy.

Again, the shrimp were very fresh and flavorful despite the intense sauce.

This time there were four shrimp (six of this size would have been a better portion).

Service was really good; I was impressed that there were so many servers and attendees. Everyone was very gracious and helpful.

Nice restaurant, touristy but in the good meaning.

Very good Indian cuisine based menu offers broad selection to everybody's liking.

Interesting desserts.

You can have your wine or beer with your dinner unlike in most Zanzibarian establishments.

Pleasant and efficient service.

This place was recommended to us by some other tourists and our city guide.

Would go back for more.
