Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Camp

I went to thisTravellers Mwaluganje elephant camp as a driver with our clients. So we couldn't really grumble. Apart from the hairy scary journey there along the bumpy roads, I could not fault this trip. Yes there are only elephants there but it's an elephant safari so that’s all we were all expecting to see. I found the food was fine, nothing special. We stayed in a tent equipped with an en suite bathroom, which was very accommodating.

I also liked the idea of camping in the wilderness. If you're expecting a luxury hotel stay whilst you're on a safari then this is not the trip for you.

If you're quite happy with the experience of camping out amongst all the animals then I would definitely recommend it, as long as you go knowing there are only really elephants there.

The camp is owned by Travellers Hotel and situated near to Shimba Hills Reserve on the south coast.

Its a good 2 hours drive across the Likoni ferry down the main south coast road.

You turn off at Tiwi and head to the interior, up hill all the way. Once past the town of Kwale, the tarmac stops and you are on murram roads.

Its a good hour's bumpy ride to the camp entrance. After checking in at the gate you game drive through the vast grounds towards the camp.

The camp has a small bar/restaurant/viewing area overlooking a watering hole. Very good close ups of the elephants that come to drink.

Apart from elephants and a few antelopes we didn't see much else on either visit.

My opinion - first time was a nice experience although you shouldn't expect to see anything other than elephants.

Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Camp is located in the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. The camp is set along the shoulder of a low hill facing a traditional elephant trail, allowing guests to watch the elephants from the comfort of their well-appointed luxury tents.

Set in the heart of the sanctuary is Travellers Mwaluganje Elephant Safari Camp, along the shoulder of a low hill facing a traditional elephant trail, and which allows guests to watch the elephants from the comfort of their well-appointed luxury tents.

This is the only tented camp in this new Elephant Sanctuary.

It is the only tented camp in this new sanctuary, and guests have virtually the entire 6,000 acres to themselves.

The bird life is prolific and will keep any birdwatcher amazed at the variety and colour of the birds regularly seen throughout the day and early evening.

The traditional African evening camp-fire is the highlight of the day, after an enthralling game drive through the forest and bush. Over a cocktail or cool drink, it is a time to recall the marvels of Africa's nature, and to wonder at the majesty and dignity of the stars of the show - the elephants.

Round off the day with a superbly-cooked meal under the stars, with the background music the hoot of a owl, the yelp of a jackal, the trumpeting of an elephant and occasionally the cough of a distant leopard.
