Overview and Brief History

Background of Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT)

In 1968, the Luo Students Leaque (Universities of East Africa), a social and cultural organization that represented past and then students at the University of Nairobi (Kenya), Makerere University (Uganda) and the University of Dar-es-salaam (Tanzania) resolved at one of their annual gatherings in Kisumu to found an institution of higher learning in Nyanza Province in Kenya.

This was an ambitious idea, which needed much careful thought and planning before it could become a practical reality.

The proposal was strongly supported by the then Luo Union (East Africa) – a cultural society of long standing in East Africa whose aims and objectives were to knit together the Community.

A committee was set up to investigate the problem and make a feasibility study of the idea.  It submitted its report in May, 1971 with a recommendation that a Vocational Training Institute should be established in the Lake Region.  A task force formed to consider the proposal in more details recommended that a new technological oriented training institute – RIAT, be established in Kisumu.

The institute would provide professional training in technical, business and applied science fields and would cater for qualified students throughout the Republic of Kenya.

The idea was strongly supported by the local community and the nation at large.  Subsequently, the project was then formally launched on Sunday December, 05, 1971. The enthusiasm with which the people embraced the idea of establishing RIAT is reflected in the slogan that emerged its inception.  RIAT  MUST BE BUILT.

Funds raised through initial and subsequent harambees were used to put up the initial infrastructure.  The donor community also responded favourably through donation of training equipment.

RIAT admitted pioneer students in 1976.
