Student Life at Kiambu Institute of Science


Student Life

While the institute is heavily concentrated on academic excellence, we understand that other dimensions of institute life are imperative for the integral growth of our students.

This is where the Office of the Dean of Students fits in within the larger dynamics the institute life.

The office of the Dean of students provides the necessary support systems for the general students’ welfare. We thank the University administration and all those whose support enables us to serve our students.


KIST Ecosystem

1. Security

There is a well structured security team headed by a chief security officer who coordinates all security issues in the institute. Where necessary the police may be contacted. To beef the security, a police base has been put up at the entrance of the institute.


2. Chaplaincy


All students are encouraged to join recognized institute societies of their choice. Currently we have Christian Union, Youth Christian Society and Seventh Day Adventist. Our aim is to promote student spiritual faith.


3. Health care services


We have a clinic which operates 24/7 managed by a well trained nurse who attendance all emergencies. Any major medical attention is referred to Kiambu district hospital which is about a kilometer from the institute.


4. Entertainment


Beside academic work the Institute organizes all entertainment through the Students’ Governing body.


5. Hostels


The Institute has four hostels which are able to accommodate 576 students; 320 males and 256 females. Those cannot be able to get accommodation within the institute they are advised to source for accommodation outside the institute.


6. Student Governance


The students are governed by KIST Student association (KISA). KISA is composed of


KISA president, KISA vice president, KIST finance minister, KISA secretary, KISA minister for health and catering, minister for information and social affaires, minister for sports, minister for education and minister for bodying.

Each ministry has an assistant. Two of the large Religious movements are incorporated in the student body (KISA). All classes have a representative who channels all academic matters to education minister


7. Students’ Stewardship and Leadership

Every year all elected students’ leaders are trained on leadership and stewardship.


8. Sports

We have activities teams which participate in both zonal and national levels


About Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology


KIST was established in 1973 by the Kiambu community on Harambee basis (pulling together and raising funds by contributions from individual community members) and is a registered Institution under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

Since its inception has produced graduates who fit globally competitive needs of modern employers and the emerging challenges.


It is in the process of obtaining quality management certification by the International organization of standards (ISO) thus aiming to give holistic approaches to training self driven graduates aimed at achieving Kenya Industrialization envisaged in the Vision 2030.

The Institute has adequately participated and outshone in National TIVET trade Fairs, Robots contests and Industrial awards. Its located 14 Km from the Nairobi city and 1Km before Kiambu town, Kiambu County.


At KIST we boast of our very helpful and highly qualified teaching staff who truly “ bring knowledge to life”.

They combine academic theoretical study with practical experience to help drive you career goals.

We compliment our training with academic trips to other institutions such as the KEBS, Government Chemists and University , East Africa Herbarium and the National Museums of Kenya, Kiambu District Hospital, Kenya Meteorological Department among others.

We also sent our students on attachment to organizations where they acquire hands on experience in their areas of specialization e.g. KEFRI.
