More about Turkana Lodge in Northern Kenya

Lake Turkana is the world’s largest permanent desert lake and a destination of choice in northern Kenya. Known as the Jade Sea because of its distinctive colour when calm, remote Lake Turkana extends from Ethiopian border southwards for 155 miles (250 km).

This beautiful lake has drawn visitors from the Western world since it was discovered in 1888 by two Austrian explorers.

The lake is a magnet for wildlife enthusiasts. In addition to exotic fish such as Nile perch and tiger fish, there are crocodiles and hippos.

The large bird population includes great pelican, yellow-billed stork, sacred ibis, African spoonbill, flamingo and African skimmer.

Lake Turkana Fishing Lodge (also called Ferguson’s Gulf Fishing Lodge) is on the West side of the lake and offers the highest concentration of birds on that side.

Boat trips are available to Central Island and the national park. The Island itself is a triple volcano with three crater lakes.
